PICTURE DAY: Picture Day is coming! Save the date: Tuesday, October 22nd

C. D. Hunking School_ Picture Day Notice (Print)(1)

CHROMEBOOKS: Hello Hunking Families,

I would like to extend a friendly reminder and stress the importance for all students to come to school each and every day with a fully charged chromebook. While our district, school, and staff do provide opportunities for students to complete some of their academics, assignments, and projects without an electronic device, the student’s chromebook is still an essential tool for their success in school. There are some subjects, classes, and assignments where chromebooks are required, and when students do not have a chromebook or it is not fully charged, it could negatively impact their ability to complete the assignment and therefore their grade.

It is important that chromebooks are charged at home, because there are limited opportunities and spaces where they can potentially be charged at school. As a staff, we greatly appreciate your support with this.

Thank you.

MUSIC BINGO: Music Bingo is on October 19th at the Roma Restaurant in Haverhill.   Even more exciting raffle prizes have come in.  Rock climbing kit and passes, free tickets to Santa’s Village, Dale Rogers dog statue, passes to Wicked Ax, portrait session at Photo Factory and MORE!

Buy your tickets here https://music-bingo-2024.cheddarup.com

THEME OF THE MONTH: The theme for our first month is KINDNESS. The definition of kindness is simply being friendly, generous, and considerate. It is part of the golden rule: treat others the way that you want to be treated. Kindness is the quality of being caring and helpful. We hope that everyone in the Hunking community will embrace this theme with us, and jumpstart an amazing school year. Staff will be on the lookout over the next month for the students that most personify this theme!

Parents/Guardians of 7th graders: If your student is interested in attending a specialized high school program in 9th grade (to include Classical Academy and CTE at HHS) or a high school other than HHS (such as Whittier, Phillips, Central Catholic, etc), 7th grade counts!! The various voc and private high schools have gotten very competitive. Attendance, Grades and Behavior are factored into the student’s score which is used for acceptance. Please remind your student how important 7th grade is for their future plans.

EDUCATIONAL HAPPENINGS:

Kindergarten: This week kindergarten dove into Wit and Wisdom which is our newly adopted reading program. We will be learning about our 5 senses through reading and writing in module 1.

In math, we are continuing to learn how to classify and count objects in groups as well as writing numerals.

4th grade: Our 4th graders have enthusiastically jumped into our new reading curriculum, Wit & Wisdom! In our first module, we’re exploring the heart through the essential question: “What does it mean to have a great heart, literally and figuratively?”

Encourage your child to share their hand signals for both a literal and figurative heart!

To enrich our learning experience, we’d love to invite a member of the Hunking community who works with the heart—such as a cardiologist, cardiac nurse, nutritionist, or athletic trainer—to come in and speak with our students. If you or someone you know is interested, please reach out to any of the 4th grade teachers via email (you can find our contact information on the Hunking website). Thank you for your support!

Grade 8: Attendance matters! This past half day we are pleased to announce 94% of grade 8 students came to school.  9/27 was our second Fun Friday where students were able to choose between basketball, soccer, roof deck, legos, movie, board games and study hall.  We hope to continue to reward this group and look forward to many days of fun together.  Student’s had their first of two presentations from the HHS Roadshow.   Ask what they learned.  There is something for….. EVERYONE!

NEWS FROM OUR NURSES:   We will be screening second grade students which includes vision and hearing.  If you receive a referral for your child, please have the child evaluated by a doctor and return the evaluation as soon as possible.

Health Forms were sent home. Please complete and send back to school as soon as possible if you not done so already. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Health Office (978-420-1913)

ATHLETIC NEWS:

Soccer:

Here’s an update on our field situation for this year’s middle school soccer season.
I met briefly with our high school Athletic Director, Tom O’Brien, Wednesday afternoon and he looked into Golden Hill to see if it would be possible to host games there starting next week. I’m hoping to find out soon if this will be possible.
As of now we have one field available , and that’s Whittier. Unfortunately, if we receive large quantities of rain Whittier’s field will NOT be playable.
It should also be noted that our transportation is extremely limited and available days are limited as well.
The reason that our  Hunkings field is not accessible at this time is because it needed to be hydroseeded. This process occurred approximately one week before school began.
We are concerned if the grass hasn’t begun growing by now, that it may likely not at this point.
We hope that this is not true, but are unclear at this point.
Should we only have one field moving forward, we will more than likely have a modified season.
We will get in as many games as possible. All teams will make the playoffs. Seeds 4 and 5 will have a play-in game. Then our semi finals and finals will be held at the high school.
Should we somehow get all of our games in, the top 4 teams will make the playoffs.
We are hoping by some miracle that Hunking’s field will be deemed playable soon. We will need to wait and see.
Please feel free to reach out to the City of Haverhill Parks and Recreation Department for more information.
I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. I’m trying to find a solution so we can have as normal of a season as possible.
Best
Ralph Wolfendale
Haverhill Middle School Athletics Coordinator
