Bobcat Bulletin 9/6/24

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

Reminder about drop off – Please remember that when dropping your students off at school to follow the traffic pattern and drop your students in the appropriate locations. No students should be dropped off on the main Hunking road. Students are also not allowed to be dropped off at the main entrance between 8:00-8:30am. Students should be dropped off in front of the lower school entrance (grades k-4) or the upper school entrance (grades 5-8). We appreciate everyone’s support with this policy in order to maintain everyone’s safety. Thank you.

3RD ANNUAL BLOCK PARTY: I want to thank all of the staff, students, families, and community members who attended and helped make our block party another successful one! It was a beautiful night with good food, games, and fun! A special thank you to our PTO for helping make this event happen! Please enjoy some pictures below.

SITE COUNCIL: Are you interested in improving the student experience at Hunking school? Would you like your ideas and voice to be heard? Can you commit one hour per month on a Thursday night from 6:30-7:30pm? We are looking for parents and community members who are interested in joining the Hunking school Site Council.

If you are interested, you can email Mr. Betty @ tbetty@haverhill-ps.org

Please add into the subject line “Site Council” and state your interests in becoming involved.

Depending on how many volunteers are interested will then determine how the selection process is determined.

Thank you.

THEME OF THE MONTH: The theme for our first month is KINDNESS. The definition of kindness is simply being friendly, generous, and considerate. It is part of the golden rule: treat others the way that you want to be treated. Kindness is the quality of being caring and helpful. We hope that everyone in the Hunking community will embrace this theme with us, and jumpstart an amazing school year. Staff will be on the lookout over the next month for the students that most personify this theme!

PTO NEWS:

  • Our 4th Annual Read-a-Thon will launch September 9th and will run through September 20th! This is meant to promote literacy, celebrate the joy of reading (for all ages and reading levels), and to raise money for Hunking (specifically learning experiences and future on- and off-site field trips)!|

To add your child as a participant, please follow these 3 easy steps:
    1. Go to this link – https://app.99pledges.com/fund/HunkingReads
    2. Enter your child’s name, enter your email(s), and select their group
    3. Click “Add” > this will take you to your newly created pledge page

Registration is completely free and we hope ALL STUDENTS will participate. NEWS FROM GUIDANCE

School Counselor: Terri Carney terri.carney@haverhill-ps.org

Parents/Guardians of 7th graders: If your student is interested in attending a specialized high school program in 9th grade (to include Classical and CTE at HHS) or a high school other than HHS (such as Whittier, Phillips, Central Catholic, etc), 7th grade counts!! The various voc and private high schools have gotten very competitive. Attendance, Grades and Behavior ALL count and are factored into the student’s score which is used for their acceptance. Please remind your student how important 7th grade is for their future plans.

Parents/Guardians of 8th graders:

On the horizon: HHS will have a “High School Roadshow” during the school day for 8th grade students two times this fall. HHS will visit Hunking during the school day to provide a wealth of information to students. The visits will be on September 27th and October 25th for 8th grade students only.

HHS Career Technical Education (CTE) Program: https://cte.haverhill-ps.org/

The application window typically opens in October.  Exact dates TBD

Whittier-application window typically opens in November and they also hold an open house early November. Exact dates TBD

EDUCATIONAL HAPPENINGS:

Math WIN starts this week!  WIN stands for “What I Need” and our students will absolutely get what they need!  Our first week cycle will begin on Monday, September 9, 2024.  Students will get enrichment, reinforcement, or intervention material from their classroom teacher, another teacher in the grade, a special education teacher, or from our math interventionists during their WIN block.  If your student will be going with one of our math interventionists, please look for the letter that was sent home with them on Friday.  Please email tcorcoran@haverhill-ps.org with any questions.

Math Drop-in Center

Need extra help in math? The math drop in center welcomes grades five through eight students from 8:00 – 8:30 A.M.  Monday – Friday in the library. (They do not have to come every day.)  Some students come in for more challenging math, some for help with homework and some just to have fun.  Please note that students must provide their own transportation.

Any questions please contact Kim Surette  ksurette@haverhill-ps.org.

Please join our remind app at https://www.remind.com/join/k39feg

Grade 7:  We have had a great start to the year and are enjoying getting to know our new students. Please make sure your student is charging their Chromebooks each night so they are ready each day.

The 7th Grade currently has two teams that make up the grade. The teams are created by homeroom and share the same teachers. This creates a closer community feel and allows teachers to easily discuss the best ways to support their students.

Gold Team– Mrs. Bizeur, Mrs. Seed, Mr. Kellerman, and Mrs. Tsolakos

Blue Team– Mr. Ryan, Mr. Thornton, and Mrs. McLaughlin

The Blue Team took their Science Class outside yesterday!  Students went on a Scavenger Nature Hunt looking for specialized structures that increases an organism’s chances of reproducing.   In ELA and Social Studies students are working on Self/Partner Biographies and creating Time Lines. Next students will present their Time Lines to their classmates!!!

Grade 8:  All iReady diagnostics are completed, please ask your student to show you their score on their Chromebook app.  This is a great way to create a routine with your student and make sure everyone is up to date with grade 8. Some apps you want to be familiar with: iReady, Google Classroom, McGraw Hill (Study Sync and Civics), and School Brains. We’d also encourage everyone to join Remind as this is an easy way to send timely messages between staff and families.

NEWS FROM OUR NURSES:    Next week we will be starting vision and hearing screening on kindergarten students. If your child has any medications that are needed at school such as Epipens and inhalers, please drop off the medication and forms in the health office. The Health Office needs an order from the student’s provider and parental consent for medication administration and the medication should be in the original bottle/box with a pharmacy label. Health Forms were sent home this week. Please complete and send back to school as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Health Office (978-420-1913).

We encourage you to join our Remind Class linked below as it is the easiest way to get up to date information and direct access to Coaches! Within this classroom practice schedules will be posted as will results from our meets in October!

Lastly, and most importantly: this year we will be capping participants. This will be a first come first serve sign up with no exceptions. We are going to cap grades 4 & 5 total to 30  for and 40 total for 6,7,8 combined. As there are only two Coaches this decision was made with safety as the primary reason.
