HUNKING SPRING CONCERT: Hunking Concert Flyer S24

Literacy News!

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming back to Hunking May 28 – June 3! This event will take place in the library during school hours. More information to come, including a class schedule and a signup for volunteers. To volunteer at the Book Fair, be sure that your CORI form is up to date.

HUNKING THEME OF THE MONTH:  It is May, and we are embracing a new theme at Hunking throughout this month. Our new theme for May will be EMPATHY. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It is generally described as the ability to take on another’s perspective, to understand, feel, and possibly share and respond to their experience. What is it like to walk in another person’s shoes? Part of being kind and respectful is to understand and accept others feelings without judgment. Staff will be on the lookout throughout this month for the students who are able to personify the theme of empathy.

Congratulations to all of our winners for April’s theme of Bravery/Acceptance:

COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS:

WASHINGTON, DC GRADE 8:

  • May 22, 2024: CHANGE OF TIME! Parent/Guardian meeting @ 5pm instead of 6pm at Hunking, in person. This is MANDATORY– no exceptions as we are taking your child out of state and you need to be there with your child to participate in the meeting. Medications for the trip itself should also be handed in at this time to the greatest extent possible. We will not be accepting any medications the day of departure. Remember…no vitamins, workout supplements, etc.
    • Buses depart Haverhill at 6am SHARP. Therefore kids will need to be at their schools for bag checks at 5am.
  • – recommended packing list (here)
  • – Review and sign student contract (here)
  • – Fill out district permission slip (here)
  • Families- check the DC google classroom for updated info
  • All payments should have been paid in full. Please contact Shirley Crosley (978) 373-9140 or scrosley@capitaltours.net if you require a payment plan so your student is not removed from the trip.
  • Important!! Prescription & nonprescription medications needed during the trip require doctor’s orders and parental consent with the exception of Motrin, tylenol, tums and benadryl if OTC form has already been completed for this school year.  (please use this form) if your child will need medication during the trip. Please bring to the Hunking Nurse’s Office parental consent, doctor order and medication labeled with the student’s name. Please make this a priority as the deadline is May 15th

Grades 7 and 8: Terri Carney   terri.carney@haverhill-ps.org

NEED A WORK PERMIT?

Planning ahead for 7th graders in the fall….

Haverhill High School Career Technical Program (CTE) https://cte.haverhill-ps.org/  as well as many other private schools and vocational schools consider 7th and 8th grade years when making admissions decisions. If you have a student who will be in 7th grade in the fall of 2024, attendance, grades and behavior are three areas that HHS CTE and the other schools consider. Admission to these programs has become more competitive so all three of the areas are important. Additionally, deadlines are critical!

EDUCATIONAL HAPPENINGS:

7th Grade ELA: Students have created their utopias in the hope of recruiting new members to their paradise. All students have started reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. This has led to some great discussions about utopias and dystopian societies.

7th Grade Math: Students have been working on an in-class project designing a blueprint for their dream house while calculating the scale factor.

8th grade: Congratulations to the 6 groups who have moved onto the next level with their Action Civics projects.  We are very proud of all the Hunking School projects.  In ELA, students have begun working on their debate and parents can look forward to being invited for this event during the month of May.  Continue to keep an eye out for information regarding end of the year events (Graduation, BSC, Canobie).

NEWS FROM OUR NURSES:  Spring weather is here. The health office does not supply allergy medication so please medicate your child accordingly if they have allergies. Also with the warmer weather, please remember to send your child in with a water bottle so they stay hydrated.

If your child was given a vision or hearing referral, please make sure it is sent back to the health office after seeing an eye or hearing specialist.

ATHLETIC NEWS:

Track & Field: We’ve had another great week of practice with our student-athletes! We recorded individual times for 100m, put together relay teams, completed conditioning practices with event specific drills and of course we had some fun! We have been provided with our meet events and their order which we encourage you to check out in our Remind class! If you have not yet joined we’d love to have you! TRACK GROUP LINK

We hope you have a great weekend!

Mr. Molloy and Mrs. Kelly will make final decisions in the coming days based on the overall application, teacher feedback, and interview. Students can expect to be informed soon of the decision. For those accepted, an induction ceremony will be held in the evening of May 30th. Details to follow. The NJHS calendar can be found here

Student Council:  Student Council sends a heartfelt “Thank you” to teachers and nurses!  We appreciate all you do for our Hunking community every day!  You are “All that and a bag of chips!”

Guitar Ensemble:  We are continuing to meet on Thursday mornings and are getting ready to strut our stuff at the May concert!

Chorus: The Hunking chorus is singing at the NH Fisher Cats game TONIGHT! Break a leg and enjoy the night at the ballpark, Bobcats, and thank you to everyone who purchased tickets and came out to support us! We are also continuing to practice for our Spring concert on Tuesday May 21st!

YEARBOOK: Caleb Dustin Hunking School is using Treering to build the yearbook. That means your yearbooks have a personal touch: your book includes two free pages for you to personalize with your photos and your memories. Join Hunking Class of 2024 Facebook Page for important information about leaving your child a message in the yearbook.

Get started by creating your free account!

You can personalize and order your book for $18.82 until May 12, 2024. (The personal pages are totally optional, so if you just want the more traditional yearbook, that’s okay, too.) Since we are ordering non-customized yearbooks for the grade, they will sell them for cash and reimburse any 8th grade families who ordered custom pages. However, the Yearbook Committee is working on sponsors (and thank you PTO for your donation) and fundraising so cost will be low to nothing. Stay tuned!

ODDS & ENDS:

-All students have been issued school IDs. It is required that they bring and wear their ID badges each day. These badges are also used for breakfast and lunches as well as to “swipe” on & off the bus.

-Please make sure that your student(s) are coming to school daily with a fully charged chromebook.

HPS has chosen School Device Coverage (SDC) to insure the Chromebooks that students have been issued. The cost of coverage for the year is $20 and includes accidental damage, loss, fire, and theft. As of right now, families have the option to sign up during the month of September (we will let you know if it extends). After sign up closes, only new students will be given a special code to sign up at registration. Our website explains SDC and has instructions on how to signing up online:

https://www.haverhill-ps.org/technology/device-insurance/

Qustodio: a FREE student safety, digital wellbeing platform that helps parents/guardians control their child’s access to the internet on their school issued devices. Qustodio is FREE for HPS Students/Families. More information and how to sign up for Qustodio can be found on our website at:

https://www.haverhill-ps.org/technology/athome/student-safety-and-digital-wellbeing-platform/

-Please make sure that you are sending your student(s) with a water bottle. We have a limited supply of cups and we do not have access to water fountains, only water bottle filling stations.
