What you need to know about the event:

-It is open to all families!
-It is a free meal (any donations will go toward the food costs)
-We will have a kid’s option (chicken fingers & french fries) as well as the regular thanksgiving style meal this year
-We will be serving food from 4:30-6:30pm so based on line sizes (and parking) we would recommend staggering your arrival times
-We are bringing back the raffle to pie a staff member in the face (we will run this event 4x throughout the night)
-We will have an art activity for families to enjoy
-There will be a “student showcase” of the lower school for parents to see their student’s work displayed
-We will have multiple raffle baskets available for families to purchase tickets for

In order for us to prepare for the event, we are asking all families to please register using the link below by Monday 11/13. When you register please make sure to include the amount of people in your family attending. There is also a section where you are able to purchase raffle tickets upon registering, and there is also an optional section to provide a “suggested” donation.

As we get closer to the event, I will send out further communication with more specific logistics (parking/entering/etc.)

We are looking forward to another great event! Please make sure to register here: http://my.cheddarup.com/c/hunking-thanksgiving-feast-2023

ATTENDANCE MATTERS CAMPAIGN: Haverhill Public schools has partnered with an organization called Haverhill Promise and is running an Attendance Matters Campaign for the rest of this calendar year. What this means is that each week for the rest of 2023, if your student is in school every day on time, they will be entered into a raffle to win a prize. If they miss a day one week, that is okay, because they can be entered into the next week’s raffle. Hunking will have 4 winners school wide each week. This contest started on 11/1 and the first time frame will run from 11/1-11/9 and then the next period will be 11/13 thru Thanksgiving break and then every week until Christmas break. The importance of this contest is that being in school daily is the first step to all students being successful in school.

HUNKING THEME OF THE MONTH: We are embracing the theme of GRATITUDE throughout the month of November! Gratitude is the quality of being thankful, readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. Staff will be on the lookout this month for the students who personify the theme of gratitude and show appreciation.

MENTOR/MENTEE program: HUNKING has brought back the mentor/mentee program this year and currently 56 lower school students are matched up with a mentor in the 7th or 8th grade. The program just completed its first month and wonderful things are happening and some special bonds are being formed. Older students are helping younger students academically, emotionally and socially. Below are some pictures of this valuable program.

EDUCATIONAL HAPPENINGS:

3rd Grade: All 3rd grade homerooms have received their “Pick a Project” to complete at home from recycled materials. We have spent a great amount of time on creating arrays to show multiplication. Now students have the opportunity to show their creativity by making a building, space probe, or neighborhood map.

8th Grade:

  • The 8th grade enjoyed cheering the K-4 Halloween parade on!
  • Students took a field trip to Haverhill High on Thursday to check out the diverse offerings for 9th grade. Students learned about the Classical program, the CTE program, and visited the Health suite to see students preparing for careers in the medical field.

  • In ELA this week, students have concluded reading WW Jacobs’s “The Monkey’s Paw” and are readying themselves to write an essay. In Science, students have just wrapped up their study of rock cycles and are beginning a unit on weather and climate. In Civics, students are drafting a DBQ (document-based question) on how self-governing societies gained traction in human history. In Math, students began Module 2: “Rigid Motions and Congruent Figures”, in which they will study geometric translations, reflections, etc.

Mrs. Fairbrother’s Music Classes: 8th grade students are learning to play the song “Mary Ann” with the tune in the left hand and chords in the right.

7th grade students started learning the keyboard and are choosing one of 3 songs to play.  They will play the melody (tune) with both hands at the same time.

2nd grade students are warming up their voices with some daily vocal exercises.  We are also moving from our study of steady beat and rhythm into pitch and melody by learning about the staff.

4th grade students are continuing their work on the ukulele.  We now know 4 chords (C, Am, F and G).  We are also reviewing how to read the notes on the staff.

7th grade: ELA students recently completed their unit 1 benchmark assessment. The students have moved on and are currently working on writing personal narratives.

NEWS FROM OUR NURSES:  We will be screening 4th grade for vision and also heights and weights next week. If your child wears glasses, please send them in with the student.

CLUB NEWS:

GSA (Gender-Sexuality Alliance): The next meeting of the GSA will be Friday, November 17th. The GSA is open to students in grades 6 through 8. The calendar for upcoming meetings can be found here

LEGO Club

  • Grades 4 & 5: Registration is now open for students interested in joining LEGO Club. Meetings will be held about once-monthly on Thursdays (calendar forthcoming). Interested students can speak to their homeroom teacher and permission slips will be distributed late next week.
  • Grades 6-8: LEGO Club is seeking student volunteers in grades 6-8 to help facilitate with the younger grades. Students interested in grades 6-8 can see Mr. Molloy in room 300. 6-8th grade student helpers will also have a once-monthly meeting to hang out and build. Mr. Molloy would just ask that interested students commit to at least one date a month to attend as a helper.

Student Council:

Student Council collaborated with the PTO to provide a fun filled night for grades 5-8 at the Halloween Dance last Friday!

The next scheduled meeting will be in Room 301 on Tuesday, November 14 from 2:45-3:45. However, we are adding a meeting on Thursday November 9th from 2:45-3:45 for any members who are able to make it. We will be preparing decorations for our Thanksgiving Feast.

CHORUS: Chorus is starting soon! We will have two choral groups, a general, non-auditioned chorus and an advanced, auditioned group. The general chorus is for students who love to sing, want to do some real chorus music, and perform in a concert later this year. The Advanced group is all that is listed above, but we will do more challenging material and (hopefully) some extra performances!

We will start rehearsals mid-November. Chorus will meet Tuesday mornings, and Advanced Chorus will meet Friday mornings.

Audition sign-ups and permission slips will be available outside of Ms. Avalos’ classroom #128, and all auditions are before school. Please see Ms. Avalos or email kathleen.avalos@haverhill-ps.org with any questions!

Drama Club:  There will be no drama club meeting next week. Only students listed on the days are required to come to rehearsals.  Rehearsals and drama club meetings will be on different days.  The schedules will be posted in Google Classroom, on the Broadway Bobcat website, on the school calendar, and posted outside the music room and room 216.

GRIT:  The GRIT club traveled to the La Vida Challenge Course at Gordon College last weekend to take part in low and high ropes team-building activities. It was an incredible day with the entire group working together to complete challenging tasks aimed at developing trust, and individuals taking personal risks on the high ropes course. GRIT will meet again this Monday, November 6th after school until 4:30 in Mr. Schaefer’s classroom.

Guitar Ensemble:  We will NOT be meeting Thursday (11/9), but we will be back together on Thursday the 16th. Those of you who have a guitar at home are encouraged to practice at home.

ODDS & ENDS:

-All students have been issued school IDs. It is required that they bring and wear their ID badges each day. These badges are also used for breakfast and lunches as well as to “swipe” on & off the bus.

-Please make sure that your student(s) are coming to school daily with a fully charged chromebook.

HPS has chosen School Device Coverage (SDC) to insure the Chromebooks that students have been issued. The cost of coverage for the year is $20 and includes accidental damage, loss, fire, and theft. As of right now, families have the option to sign up during the month of September (we will let you know if it extends). After sign up closes, only new students will be given a special code to sign up at registration. Our website explains SDC and has instructions on how to signing up online:

Qustodio: a FREE student safety, digital wellbeing platform that helps parents/guardians control their child’s access to the internet on their school issued devices. Qustodio is FREE for HPS Students/Families. More information and how to sign up for Qustodio can be found on our website at:

https://www.haverhill-ps.org/technology/athome/student-safety-and-digital-wellbeing-platform/
