MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL: 

I am grateful for a great first week and a half of school! It has been great having the students & staff back in the building!! Students seem to be reacclimating themselves to our structures and routines, and staff are doing an amazing job of building relationships and preparing students for the year ahead! It has also been amazing to welcome our new Kindergartners to our school!

As we prepare for the first full (5 day) week of school, I just want everyone to be reminded that we appreciate your continued support and value your partnership as we ask students to take pride in our school and all of the work that was done to make our school building beautiful this summer. We hope that you will reinforce safety through both modeling of our arrival & dismissal procedures and consistently speaking with your students about our procedures and structures here at Hunking. Finally, I would greatly appreciate families continuing to support and promote kindness & respect with their students, as this is the number one rule at Hunking!

I am looking forward to an amazing school year with you all!

IN OTHER NEWS: Please be advised that while I am a dog lover, we cannot have dogs on school grounds during school hours (including arrival & dismissal). Dogs are not permitted to be on school property. Thank you for your support with this. 

This is our opportunity to start the new school year off by bringing our whole Hunking community together for a fun night with a lot of great activities and food!

Hunking’s 2nd Annual “Fun Run”: Please stay tuned in the coming week for more information about our big school fundraiser where our school and PTO partner with Boosterthon for a “Fun Run”! The event date is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30th with much more information to come!

PTO NEWS: 

I want to invite any and all of you to our 1st PTO meeting of the school year. It is scheduled to take place here at Hunking on Tuesday, September 15th, from 4:00-5:00pm. 

Our PTO here at Hunking is an amazing organization that partners with the school in order to provide amazing opportunities, including supporting our community events, promoting and funding student field trips, and providing fundraising experiences and opportunities that support our school in so many beneficial ways, just to name a few. 

While we have some active members who have been amazing, we are always looking for new, energetic faces to help drive fresh ideas and initiatives. 

Our 1st meeting will include a discussion about our 1st and biggest fundraiser of the year, “Hunking’s 2nd Annual Fun Run”, as well as a discussion about the schedule of future meetings, goals for the year, and any interest in members stepping into leadership roles.

We hope many of you will join us as we look forward to another amazing year here at Hunking!

**NJHS will offer FREE babysitting during the PTO meeting.  Members can support with homework and entertain your student, while guardians can freely get involved in Hunking’s amazing PTO.

EDUCATIONAL HAPPENINGS: 

7th Grade: In Mrs. McLaughlin’s science class students have been investigating who stole Mr. K’s meatballs out of the lounge! They have been looking at evidence and primary sources to solve the mystery - who was it?? In math students completed their iReady Diagnostic and will be starting our WIN blocks next week.

8th Grade:  What is the morning routine in 8th grade?  There are so many options!  Starting with breakfast before entering our floor followed by listening to music (teacher oldies), catching up on classwork, homeroom hang out, common area chat with teachers and the famous deck hockey!

Academic news, both ELA and Math have completed iReady diagnostic.  Scores will be heading your way soon.  Science has jumped into the new district piloted curriculum OpenSciEd, while Civics hit the ground running in US mapping.

NEWS FROM OUR NURSES:  

If your child has any medications that are needed at school, such as Epipens and inhalers, please drop off the medication and forms in the health office. The Health Office needs an order from the student’s provider and parental consent for medication administration, and the medication should be in the original bottle/box with a pharmacy label. Please reach out to the Health office if you did not receive an allergy/asthma packet. 

Everyone should have received an Annual Health Update and Permission form. Please complete and send back to school as soon as possible, if not already done. Please list the medications you do not want your child to have in school and sign the bottom of the form. If your child will be participating in any sports this year, they will need a current physical in order to play. Our fax number is 978-374-5790 if you would like the doctor to fax it to our office.

Please remember to send your child in with a water bottle. If you have any questions, concerns, or health updates on your child please call the Health Office (978-420-1913). 

ATHLETICS

Volleyball - Sign-ups are still open for our clinic next Saturday Sept 19th. If you didn’t get a flyer there is one attached in the Hunking Volleyball Google Classroom. The code for the class is t7ezqpi. Notifications will be sent out later next week via email if there are any changes.

CLUB NEWS: 

Guitar Ensemble:  There will be a meeting for NEW members on THURSDAY, October 1st. Anyone interested in joining guitar ensemble will meet in Mrs. Fairbrother’s room (143)  after school until 3:30.  Students should be sure to have a way home and dismissal will be from the Main entrance at the front of the school.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Fairbrother

Drama Club:  Drama club is back and ready to get to the stage.  Our first meeting is Monday, September 14th, from 2:45 to 4:00, in room 113. This meeting is open to all students in grades 5-8.  Students will be dismissed at 4 from the doors at the upper school drop-off area. 

Our fundraiser with Double Good popcorn will start on September 14 at 5:00 p.m. and will run till September 21. Reach out to Mr. K or Mrs. Fairbrother with any questions on how to order. 

Chorus: Chorus begins next week! For any students interested in joining chorus, we will meet on Monday September 14th for students in grades 5-8, and Tuesday September 15th for students in grades 3-4. Permission slips are outside room #127 or can be picked up at the first rehearsal. Parents: please drop your student off behind the school in the bus lane at the music room door. The door is on the lower school side and is marked with a #13 over the door, and there will be signs as well. Please reach out to Ms. Avalos with any questions!

Tri-M: Our first Tri-M meeting for existing members will be next Wednesday Sept 16th in the music room after school. The meeting ends promptly at 3:30pm. Please reach out to Ms. Avalos with any questions or concerns.

Student Council: The first meeting for Student Council will be next Friday, September 18th from 2:45- 3:45 in room 301. If there is a councilor not longer interested in serving or is unable to make it, they should see Mrs. Mansour or Mrs. Corkum before the meeting date.

Technology Resources: 

HPS offers the opportunity to protect school-issued devices for the school year by paying a Device Waiver Fee. As outlined in the HPS Student Technology Device Policy, this $20 fee will help to cover the costs of potential damage, repair, or loss for the school year for the assigned device. Please note: issues of theft should still be reported to the police. The $20 covers 1 student for 1 school year. So families with more than one student will have to sign each student up separately. Some of the replacement costs are as follows:

Charger - $39

LCD Screen - $80

Top/Bottom Cover - $30-$35

Keyboard $70

Trackpad $15

Device Replacement Costs (when Chromebook is unrepairable) $199

-Please make sure that you are sending your student(s) with a water bottle. We have a limited supply of cups, and we do not have access to water fountains, only water bottle filling stations.
