Student Action Civics Project
The NJHS has started Hunkings first ever school supplies recycling system. This system started from an 8th grade civics project and has now become a reality. With this system, students, parents, and teachers are able to benefit from reused school supplies. Instead of throwing your child’s supplies away when they empty out their locker, they can put it into recycled paper box bins down in front of the main office.
These supplies will be sorted by NJHS members and then stored over the summer. When the open house comes around, the supplies will be put out on tables and students can take a given amount to have a successful year! Any of the stuff that is not taken by the students will be given to the teachers for their classrooms.
Literacy News: The Haverhill Public Library visited grades K-4 this week, to talk to students about summer reading opportunities. The summer reading program “kicks-off” on Saturday June 14. Here is a list of summer events:

THEME OF THE MONTH: Throughout the month of May, we will be embracing the theme of EMPATHY. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Empathy is generally described as the ability to take on another person’s perspective, to understand, feel, and possibly share and respond to their experience. It is what it is like to walk in another person’s shoes. You can all demonstrate empathy by actively listening, validating others’ feelings, and using nonverbal cues like eye contact when having conversations with others. Staff will be on the lookout throughout this month for the students who best personify this theme.
(If you have trouble accessing the menus, please go to www.fdmealplanner.com and enter “Hunking” as the school location.)

4th Annual GR8 Debate!
Last week, our 8th graders demonstrated incredible courage as they took to the podium to argue some of today’s most pressing issues, from the ethics of GMO foods to the implications of Artificial Intelligence in education. More than a competition, the GR8 Debate gave our students a platform to speak up, listen critically, and grow as confident communicators and citizens, especially when it came to responding to opponents’ points with “off the cuff” rebuttals rather than just reading from their notes! Kudos to those students who challenged themselves to do just that. A big thank you to all the participants, teachers, and supporters who made it a success!
HEALTH: Friday, June 6 is National “Wear Orange Day” – Ms Curry has been organizing this event at Hunking for the last several years. Gun violence prevention advocates and organizations nationwide have taken up the color orange as the color of gun violence awareness and the first Friday in June is now considered National Gun Violence Awareness Day. “Wear Orange” honors the 125 people shot and killed every day in the United States, along with the hundreds more who are wounded and the countless others whose lives have been changed by gun violence. Any student wearing orange on Fri., June 6 is eligible for a surprise treat from members of GRIT and Ms Curry’s student helpers! https://wearorange.org/
NEWS FROM OUR NURSES: We are wrapping up the school year and parents of students with medication in the health office will need to pick up their medications such as inhalers and epipens. Please reach out to the office to make arrangements to pick up the medications at 978-420-1913. We will also be sending home paperwork for next year.
The health office does not have allergy medication, so please have your child take allergy medication if needed before coming to school. Please make sure to apply sunscreen, particularly when your child is going on a field trip. It is important to protect a child’s skin from getting sunburned. The health office does not have sunscreen. Also, please send your child in with a water bottle. There are refill stations throughout the school for water.
