Bobcat Bulletin (8/26/22)

Ready or Not…Here we Go!! I am excited that the time is upon us to start the 2022-2023 school year! I look forward to an amazing year at Hunking! I look forward to the partnership and collaboration with all Hunking community members as we venture through this school year to make it an incredibly successful one for all of our students!

I want to give a special thank you to all of the students and families who participated in summer home visits with me over the past 2 months. In all, I was able to conduct just over 50 visits and met over 80 students during these visits! I loved being able to start building relationships and connections with each student and family that will extend right into our year.

Please see below for all of the most up to date news and information to be aware of as we welcome everyone back! I hope that everyone enjoys this final weekend of summer vacation!! Looking forward to next week!!

First Day of School: Grade 1-8 is on Tuesday, August 30. Kindergarten is on Wednesday, September 7

Open House:  We will be hosting our open house on Monday, August 29th. We will be staggering the times throughout the evening to help reduce traffic and any potential parking issues. We would highly encourage families who live close enough to walk to do so, and if other families want to carpool, that may also be beneficial. The timing of the open house is as follows:

4:00pm-5:00pm: 1st-4th grade families
4-4:15pm: Welcome/Introduction in the Gym
4:15-5pm: Classrooms
4:45-5pm: Q&A w/Mr. Betty in the gym (Optional)

4:30pm-5:30pm: 5th grade families
4:30-4:45pm: Welcome/Introduction in the Gym
4:45-5:30pm: Classrooms
5:15-5:30pm: Q&A w/Mr. Betty in the gym (Optional)

5:00pm-6:00pm: 6th-8th grade families
5-5:15pm: Welcome/Introduction in the Gym
5:15-6pm: Classrooms
5:45-6pm: Q&A w/Mr. Betty in the gym (Optional)

We have allotted the 5th grade their own time due to the fact that many of our 5th grade students are transitioning from Bradford Elementary and other schools within our district, and have yet to have the opportunity to get acclimated to Hunking.

The open house will be conducted inside the building this year. We are asking that all families report to the gym when they arrive for a brief welcome/introduction. I will then release families to report to their student’s classroom where the teachers will be waiting. We will have staff available to guide/direct families to the appropriate locations. Forty five minutes after your arrival, I will be available in the gym for an optional Q&A session.

We will have additional information tables in our main hallway to include Transportation (5:00-6:00pm), the PTO, YMCA (before & aftercare), additional Hunking information (sports, activities), etc.

We will likely have a couple of activities for students and siblings to participate in as well.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday evening!

Class Assignments: All class assignments should be finalized at this point and visible through the community portal.

**Disclaimer: All classroom assignments are made with great care by our staff each May and June. In the case of students coming from Bradford Elementary or other Haverhill schools, our staff has collaborated with the staff of the sending schools to complete the best placement possible.

Based on our enrollment numbers, group changes or changes in classroom assignment cannot be accommodated in almost all cases.

CELL PHONE POLICY: As the school year begins, I wanted to make sure that this policy was shared again so that all students and families are clear to what the Hunking policy is. We would greatly appreciate all families reviewing this information with your students.

-Cell phones are not allowed to be used throughout the school day. The expectation is that the phone is turned off and put away.

-If students are found to be using their cell phone for any purpose the following policy will be followed:

-1st offense: Cell phone will be confiscated and submitted to the main office where the student can get the phone back at the end of the day with a warning.

-2nd offense: Cell phone will be confiscated and submitted to the main office where a parent/guardian will need to pick up the phone.

-3rd offense: Cell phone will be confiscated and submitted to the main office where a parent/guardian will need to pick up the phone and the student will be issued an office detention.

-4th offense: Cell phone will be confiscated and submitted to the main office where a parent/guardian will need to pick up the phone and a meeting will need to take place in order to establish a contract where phone can either be dropped off at arrival time and picked up at dismissal, or the phone is not allowed in school.

-Students will not be allowed to have cell phones in the bathroom. Students will need to leave their phones face down on their desk when leaving for the bathroom.

-We recognize the importance for students to have cell phones, but we respectfully ask for your support in reinforcing the cell phone rules. If there is ever a reason for a student to call home, I am happy to allow them to utilize my office phone. Also, if you have to get in touch with your student, we would ask that you please contact the main office during school hours.
